How to Style a Coffee Table

We are helping solve a very common decorating question we get asked frequently at SwatchPop, "What do I put on my coffee table?" With so many options and products out there to consider, deciding how to decorate a coffee table can be a hard task to tackle. We want to help make this task a little easier so we are sharing 3 simple tips to help you decide what to put on your coffee table. Here we go!

#1. Decorate in the shape of your coffee table

Imagine a living room. The furniture arrangement in that living room is usually based off the shape of the room so it flows well with its surroundings. How to style a coffee table depends on the shape of the coffee table for that exact same reason. If you are styling a square table, the decor you use should all group into the shape of a square as well. The same concept applies for a rectangular or circular table.

To establish the shape, create a base using trays, books, boxes, bowls and/or vases. Spread these items out on the table in the shape needed. For example: a round coffee table's base can either be a large round decorative tray or 3 small groupings to mimic a circle.

#2. Layer smaller accessories at various heights

Layering is key to styling a coffee table. If one of your bases is a stack of hardcover books, consider layering a decorative object on top. If one of your bases is a vase, consider placing greenery stems inside. If one of your bases is a bowl, consider adding decorative fillers inside.

A big tip to layering these accessories is to make sure they are all at various heights to keep the overall look visually interesting.

#3. Use decor that is practical for everyday life

Although the meaning of "decorative" is to be ornamental and just for looks, decorative items on a coffee table can still be functional and practical. Decorative trays are very helpful to keep the table organized and clutter-free. Decorative boxes and bowls are another practical item that helps store small items like remotes when not being used. Candles and coasters are other functional decorative items to consider.

Not everything on your coffee table is going to be practical but at least try to keep the majority of the pieces functional for everyday life.
